Passivhaus (Passive House) Design
A Passive House (Passivhaus) requires very little energy to maintain a constant, pleasant temperature. In this sense, such buildings are almost “passive” as they need hardly any active heating or cooling to stay comfortable year-round. Excellent insulation and highly efficient heat recovery systems make this possible. Passive design principles are well known in engineering as effective strategies to achieve a goal with little to no input. Passive security, passive filters, passive cooling and Passive House are examples of the successful implementation of this idea.
Passive Houses are characterised by an especially high level of thermal comfort with minimum energy consumption. In general, the Passive House Standard provides excellent cost-effectiveness particularly in the case of new builds. The categories; Passive House Classic, Plus or Premium can be achieved depending on the renewable primary energy (PER) demand and generation of renewable energy.

The categories; Passive House Classic, Plus or Premium can be achieved depending on the renewable primary energy (PER) demand and generation of renewable energy.
The Passive House Classic certification does not need any form of renewable energy to acheive, whereas the plus and premium require a minimum level of energy generated from renewable solutions to merit certification.

Criteria is met in each section by either passing the primary criteria , or meeting the alternative in the second column. Each section needs to pass a criteria in order for the building to be be certified.

What can our designers do for you?
Our internal designers can provide pragmatic advice and deliver on compliant Passivhaus designs. We will comment on the building form for suitability, rotation, preferred layout as well as internal M&E services that would be required in order to achieve the desired level of Passivhaus certification. We would generate an extensive report detailing the requirements and guide you through every step of the process to certification.
We use the Passive House Planning Package tool to assist us in the design. As experienced engineers we can also comment on the viability of the equipment and if it is suitable for reuse, this is where most passive house accredited designers won’t have the capability.
